  • The most incredible 10 modified people

Getting your first piercing or tattoo is a rite of passage for many young people. Whether you do it because of the aesthetics or because the design holds a special meaning to you, tattooing is an art form most people want to experience during their lives. For some people, getting one, two, or ten tattoos isn’t quite enough and they feel the need to decorate their whole bodies to the maximum with tattoos, piercings or implants. The following people have dedicated their lives to looking and being as different as possible from us with the art of body modification.. some, in the most extreme way possible. #10. The Enigma Whether Paul Lawrence is a fan of jigsaw puzzles is unknown, but one look at him and you would probably hazard a guess that he is. Enigma’s tats are the work of over 200 tattoo artists. At one point he had 23 working on him at the same time. #9. Kala Kaiwi Kaiwi has 75 percent of his body covered in tattoos, a split tongue, 70-odd piercings, numerous silicon implants in his face, and stretched ear-lobes and nostrils. Kaiwi was inspired to look the way he does by his strong connection with his indigenous Hawaiian culture and the piercing are all made by himself. #8. Etienne Dumont Dumont, from Geneva, is completely covered in tattoos, has silicon implants like horns on his forehead, big rings in each earlobe, and Plexiglas piercings through his lips and nose. To justify his reputation as “Living Art,” the 60-year-old Dumont had his own photography exhibition in 2009 in the Krisal gallery in Geneva. He had his first tattoo in 1974. #7. The Zebra Man Before his death in 1969, Ridler explained, “underneath it all, I’m just an ordinary man,” although his past as a World War I hero (he was decorated for outstanding conduct and gallantry in Mesopotamia) would suggest he was always destined to stand out from the crowd. #6. Julia Gnuse: The Illustrated Lady Julia Gnuse was born different. She suffers from a rare condition called porphyria, which basically means that her skin easily blisters in sunlight, leading to scarring. Believe it or not, it was actually Gnuse’s doctor whorecommended that she look into getting some body art done—particularly with ink which matched the color of her scars. #5. Tom Leppard: The Leopard Man Formerly considered by the Guinness Book of World Records to be the world’s most tattooed man, Tom Leppard, now 73 years old, fled society years ago after spending £5,500 to have his body covered in leopard-like spots. He lived in a small cabin on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Once every week, the ex-soldier travelled by canoe to buy supplies and pick up his pension. However, in 2008 he moved into a small house on Skye after a friend offered to move him by boat. “I’m getting too old for that kind of life,” he said. #4. The Lizardman Born Eric Sprague in 1972, the Lizardman was one of the first people to have a split tongue and in some circles is seen to be wholly responsible for the recent popularity of this particular modification. This 37 year old man has transformed himself into a reptile via 700 hours of tattooing, five Teflon horns implanted beneath the skin of his eyebrows, filing down of his teeth into sharp fangs, bifurcation of his tongue, and stretching of his septum and earlobes. #3. Dennis Avner: Catman Are you a cat or a dog person? Dennis Avner was most certainly the former. The Native American, also known as Stalking Cat, took his allegiance to his totem animal, the tiger, to the extreme. Avner had extensive tattooing, numerous piercings, implants which allowed him to “wear” whiskers, more implants to change the shape of the face, his ears surgically pointed, and his teeth sharpened—all for the love of cats. #2. Matt Gone Matt Gone, the human checkerboard, who’s not letting a little thing like advanced kidney disease get in the way of finishing his bodysuit tattoo. You can see Matt Gone coming from a mile off. With a 98 per cent coverage bodysuit – including a striking black-and-white chequerboard pattern cascading over his face, neck, chest and shoulders – it’s hard to blend into the crowd. #1. Rick: The Zombie Boy Text: Patricia Pitner #bodymodification #tattoo #ink #halloween #Themostincredible10modifiedpeople #zombie #Piercing

  • DALeast

DALeast is a very interesting street artist that was born in China and is currently living in South Africa. He studied sculpture at the Institute of Fine Arts and he decided to give his art work to the public spaces in 2004. His art is quite impressive and it is easy to recognize the original style no matter where you find his murals. He is mainly inspired by the animal world which he represents so beautiful in his work. His latest piece was the response to an invitation from Urban Nation and their project, M/6. Urban Nation supports the international urban art by organizing exhibitions, events, workshops in a non-profit space where they promote the creative exchange in the community. Project M/6 is one of their programs where DALeast was invited to leave his trademark on the façade of their headquarters in Berlin. The mural he decided to unveil was the head of an eagle that looks like it was shaped by grinder sparks. You can notice all these and more details in the pictures below: Text: Diana Porumboiu #mural #streetart #GRAFFITI #DALeast #Berlin

  • BAStattoo

BAStattoo & GALLERYart caffe, placed in Cluj Napoca, has been inspired by the Buddhist temples, prevailing in luxurious details. Bodacious elements like the golden-wooden gramophone, the old yet preserved mirror, the dominance of dark-wood in royal furniture enhance the vintage vibe encased in the coffee shop. The selection of Tibetan paintings and Buddhist statues goes perfectly with the luxurious decor of the coffee shop which can be easily mistaken for an Asian palace or a Royal temple. The soft light brings in harmony due to the colors displayed in a warm pallete, golden details intertwining with the red walls, curtains and the seated place. • Alice Pasquini

Alice Pasquini is an Italian visual artist born and based in Rome where she works as an illustrator, set designer and painter. Apart from that, she travels to different countries to make her art public and accessible to everyone. You are probably used to the street art that sends messages, makes statements and tackles social and political issues. Well, this one paints about positive emotions and brings joy to the grey streets. Alice says that she creates “art about people and their relationships, I’m interested in representing human feelings and exploring different points of view. I especially like to depict strong and independent women.” She did this on the streets of Salerno as well, for the Fondazione Alfonso Gatto. The organization was founded in honor of the 20th century poet, Alfonso Gatto, born in this same town. Since the writer’s hermetic poetry has always been inspired by love, the artist tried to recreate on the walls the feelings transmitted by the author through words. She kept her personal touch using bright and powerful colors and continued focusing on women as main characters. You can enjoy more of her art work on her website . • Pejac

Pejac is a Spanish artist that wanted to offer the experience of his art work to the people, and brought it on the streets. He recently created three pieces in the Asian part of Istanbul, in Uskudar, and amazed people passing by. Trompe-l’oeil is actually an art technique meant to deceive the eye using realistic imagery to create an optical illusion. Pejac creates beautiful murals that look like they always belonged there and he is often using the trompe-l’oeil technique. His purpose is to make people’s brain turn and think and he beautifully explains that: “I would like my work to produce the same result as when you whisper into someone’s ear; Gentle and discrete – but right into the brain… a whisper in the form of a question.” For him the walls are just like canvases and he paints them carefully and patiently with small brushes. Just like the artist declared “making a work look simple is quite complex” and we can confirm that by taking a closer look to the detailing of his murals. • Alex Chinneck

The newest architectural creation belonging to British artist Alex Chinneck is making quite a fuss due to the unicity of the ‘levitating’ building in London’s Covent Garden. His project, ‘Take my lightning but don’t steal my thunder’, a beautiful dialogue between  architecture and art  recreates the iconic Covent Garden market building which appears like it is floating 3m (10 ft) in air. CNC-cut polystyrene being the dominant material used, the prefabricated building uses empty middle space, remaining with the top of the building ‘unsupported’. For rounding up this project the British Artist has teamed up with architectural consultants, structural engineers, steel fabricators, carpenters, and set builders. As Chinneck declares “My objective was to create an accessible artwork that makes a harmonious but breath-taking contribution to its historic surroundings, leaving a lasting and positive impression upon the cultural landscape of Covent Garden and in the minds of its many visitors.” ’Take my lightning but don’t steal my thunder’ will be on display at London’s Covent Garden’s East Piazza up till October 24, 2014. For a close view of the making and the result take a look at the video and photos below: Text: Diana Slabinschi #LevitatingInMidAir #LondonsFamedCoventGarden #MarketBuilding
