The creativity of Spanish street artist Okuda San Miguel finds expression in dressing the naked walls. The street artist can brag about owning a rich and colourful portofolio varying from photography to wide wall paintings and installations featured both in galleries and out in the streets of different cities around the globe. Born in Santander in 1980 Oscar (Okuda) San Miguel Erice graduated from the Bellas Artes department of the University of Complutense. Although living and working mainly in Madrid many of his works are located in different cities across the world. Since 1997 he developed a distinctive and unique approach regarding murals. His style evolved and became further personalized after Okuda San Miguel’s participation in the IAM Project, together with San and Nano1814. Works and illustrations of the artist have been exhibited in posters and art installations sponsored by world-wide known brands such as Puma, Adidas, Kia Motors, POLO by Ralph Lauren and many others. Okuda San Miguel’s themes extend upon the notions of contradictions of existentialism, the universe, the infinity, the meaning of life, the self-inflicted, false liberty promoted by capitalism. The manner in which he developed his work bears the influences of pop surrealism, covering the walls in geometric colorful shapes employed in contrast with grey organic forms. His works talk about the conflict between contemporaneity and our roots and between the human being and oneself. Not long ago we talked about the Spanish street artist SpY and his ingenious “Moon” installation . So it’s time to give you the latest news on the subject. SpY was invited to take part in the Nuit Blanche event, in the 13th district of Paris where he painted a wall in phosphorescent paint. Reminding us of “The Treachery of Images” (La trahison des images), the “I am not an artist” message is really representative for the event, since it lights up at night, just like the city lights up during the “White Night” artistic happening. The letters were painted with phosphorescent paint that is replenished throughout the day by the light of the sun as well as by spotlights placed in front of the building. Borondo is a complex artist who is creating wherever and whenever he has the opportunity to express himself. His murals are clearly inspired by his personal work on canvas and his personal signature is the painting-like look. The classical painting techniques that he is also applying on walls are somehow impressive. His characters blend into the walls and even though they might seem unfinished, this gives a more realistic and expressionist effect. The piece he recently did in Paris, called “Les Trois Ages” (the three ages) was done using the same techniques, meaning brushstroke and dripping paint, almost like the painting came with the building. We previously talked about Kobra and his impressive work. The latest mural he did is in New York where he added his kaleidoscopic art on a brick wall. Using his usual signature, portraits in powerful colors and the straightforward message, he depicted Warhol and Basquiat as box fighters. German artist HENDRIK BEIKIRCH , also known as ECB , creates fascinating works of art from pure characters who appear in front of the viewer either melancholic or sensitive. BEIKIRCH designed murals in many places all over the world, creating much larger works of art, transforming everything into a daring experiment. In Brunssum, The Netherlands, he painted a 14 story high portrait of a foreign worker named Vladislav . SORRY, NOT SORRY allows the 192 days of street art to turn into a real festival on May 7 & 8. Besides the already painted with graffiti walls and artworks, SORRY, NOT SORRY wants to use this festival to get the general public acquainted with street art in all its possible manifestations. First in San Francisco, and now in New York, PAIROJ PICHETMETAKUL wanders the streets every week pushing a folding cart that holds his brushes, paint, and a long roll of canvas. “What is your name?” he asks when he encounters a homeless person. “Why are you homeless? Where is your family? What are your dreams?” And, the final line, “Can I paint you?” Some say no. Some shout and curse at him. Many say yes. PAIROJ paints his subjects on 10-foot-wide by 150-foot-long rolls of canvas, sliced into shorter, more convenient lengths that are later attached back together. He’s already filled four scrolls with side-by-side portraits of some 250 homeless men and women and plans to start work on a 300-foot scroll soon. “I want people to learn from me when I paint,” PAIROJ says. “I want to inspire them and let them know the homeless need help. I just remind them that we’re all one. We all need hope.” “Some homeless people just want someone to talk to. People are scared of them. But when I paint, people come and talk to them,” the artist says. People also give money. PAIROJ never keeps the money because he doesn’t want to “profit from their lives.” He gives it to his subjects along with a container of food that he gets from a Thai restaurant in Queens where he works as a waiter. We’ve talked about blackout tattooing here  and we kind of loved it! So let’s spread the word furthermore, turning our eyes on American Artist YUSK IMAI and his body paintings. His curiosity on human anatomy led him to paint figures, hands, and legs. This interest eventually gave rise to his monochrome body painting project, called “Exoskeleton” , where he decided to try and paint on actual bodies, with all the distinct textures that he has created for his paintings. ” An exoskeleton is the external skeleton that supports and protects animal’s body, it’s a second skin. It protects animals such as cicadas, lobsters, armadillos and other insects. My idea is to create a second skin for a human body, a protection, another layer for the body” , confesses the Artist. IMAI uses acrylic ink and water based markers and so it takes a few minutes to wash it off because it’s ephemeral.
