  • Banksy

A new mural by street artist Banksy showing a group of pigeons holding anti-immigration banners has been destroyed by council officials following a complaint the work was “racist”. The mural, worth around £400,000 in Clacton-on-Sea, where a by-election is due to take place following the local MP’s defection to UKIP, appeared this week. The local council which removed it, said it did not know it was by Banksy, conceding that the artist’s political satire was lost on them. Tendring District Council said it received a complaint that the mural was “offensive” and “racist”. The artist, who chooses to remain anonymous, posted pictures of the work on his website earlier. Banksy’s work has covered many controversial topics including climate change, surveillance culture, workers’ rights and war. Visitors to the artist’s website can see pictures of the wall before and after the artwork. Images: www.banksy.co.uk Text: Diana Scorici #banksy #streetart #GRAFFITI #UK #paints #ClactononSea

  • Mr X | VIDEO

Mr X’ is a short film directed by Alex Nicholson. The video offers a highly personal insight into X’s thoughts on his craft and significant moments in his own life. Alex told a bit more about the project: “Over the last few years Duncan (MR X) has tattooed me several times and I’ve gotten to know him quite well. He is tattooist at In2you tattoo in London.. The production take about 4 weeks in pre-production and tests, 1 day to shoot and a further 10 weeks in post with MPC. Today, tattoos are more accessible, and they are almost socially acceptable. Artists are getting better and so is their equipment. You can also now get them removed (at some pains).” “In some ways I wanted to show people what he looked like without his tattoos but in others ways it was used as a canny device to move the film along. Denise Kum (our make up artist) spent hours perfecting the technique needed to take his tattoos off and MPC then spent their own hours putting them back on. Really intriguing stuff! Beautifully shot, awesome editing and a brilliant story. The best portrait of a tattoo artist I’ve seen. Illustration by Chris Martin. Music written and performed by Russ Chimes.
